Stop WhatsApp saving photos to your iPhone

In WhatsApp, tap Settings, then Chats, and turn off Save to Photos; WhatsApp turns it on by default, so every photo you download also lands in your Photos library until you do.

Why does WhatsApp save photos to my iPhone?

Because it is set to by default. WhatsApp’s help page says it automatically saves the photos, videos and audio you receive to your phone, and that Save to Photos is on until you change it.

That means a photo from a private chat sits in your Photos library next to everything else, and, if iCloud Photos is on, in iCloud too.

How do I stop WhatsApp saving photos to my iPhone?

For every chat:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Settings (or your profile picture), then Chats.
  3. Turn off Save to Photos.

New photos now stay inside WhatsApp. You can still save one on purpose by pressing and holding it and tapping Save.

Changing this does not undo choices you already made for particular chats. Check those too.

How do I stop saving photos from just one chat?

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the contact or group name at the top.
  3. Tap Save to Photos and choose Never.

The other choices are Default, which follows your main setting, and Always, which saves everything from that chat whatever the main setting says.

How do I stop WhatsApp downloading photos at all?

You can also stop photos downloading until you tap them:

  1. In WhatsApp, tap Settings (or your profile picture), then Storage and data.
  2. Under Media auto-download, tap Photos (and Videos, Audio, Documents as you like).
  3. Choose Never.

Each photo then downloads only when you tap it.

What about photos already in my Photos app?

Turning the setting off only affects new photos. To clear what is already there:

  1. Open Photos and find the WhatsApp photos. They usually sit together in your library by the date you received them.
  2. Select them and delete them.
  3. Open Recently Deleted and empty it. Until you do, iOS keeps them for 30 days.

Do disappearing messages and view once help?

Yes, in different ways.

  • Disappearing messages: WhatsApp says that when they are on in a chat, media sent there disappears and is not saved to your photos. You can choose 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days, for one chat, or for every new chat under Settings > Privacy > Default message timer.
  • View once: a photo sent this way cannot be saved, forwarded, copied or screenshotted, and must be opened within 14 days.

WhatsApp is also clear about the limits: someone can photograph a view-once photo with another camera, and a backup made before a message disappears includes that message.

Where should I keep WhatsApp photos I want to keep?

If you turn off Save to Photos and still need to keep a particular photo, save it on purpose and decide where it lives.

The Hidden album in Photos keeps it out of your main library, and anyone with your passcode can open it. A vault app keeps it behind a separate secret. Oorvel, for example, encrypts it on the phone under six words that are not your passcode, with no account and no cloud.

Then delete the copy from Photos and empty Recently Deleted, so the only copy is the protected one.

Frequently asked

Does WhatsApp save photos to my iPhone automatically?
Yes. WhatsApp's help page says it saves the photos, videos and audio you download to your phone, and that Save to Photos is turned on by default.
Will turning off Save to Photos remove photos already saved?
No. It only stops new ones. Photos that were already saved stay in your Photos library until you delete them there.
Are disappearing messages saved to my photos?
According to WhatsApp, no. When disappearing messages are on in a chat, media sent in that chat disappears and is not saved to your photos.
Can I save a view-once photo on WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp says you cannot save, forward, copy or screenshot view-once photos and videos. The person can still photograph the screen with another camera.
